Jérémie Buchholtz estava à procura de um apartamento com preço acessível na cidade de Bordeaux, na França. Com seu orçamento limitado, acabou não encontrando nada, porém, a necessidade o fez ter uma ideia incrível: Transformar uma garagem velha em sua nova casa.
Trabalhando como fotógrafo e dividindo seu tempo entre Paris e Bordeaux, o francês tinha em caixa uma quantia que representava apenas a metade do valor de uma moradia convencional. Isso fez com que, Jérémie abrisse os olhos para uma nova oportunidade. Em suas pesquisas pela cidade, ele encontrou uma garagem velha que estava a venda por 80.000 euros, menos da metade do valor de uma casa na região.
A garagem definitivamente não convencia ninguém de que pudesse ser uma casa. Com uma grande porta metálica na entrada, o ambiente interno era completamente mal iluminado e estava repleto de lixo.
Enquanto seus amigos duvidavam de que fosse possível transformar aquele espaço em uma habitação, Jérémie Buchholtz convidou o arquiteto especializado em conversão de diversos espaços em casa, Matthieu de Marien, para dar uma olhada na garagem e dizer se era possível alguém morar ali.
De Marien reconheceu algo especial naquele lugar e aceitou o desafio de transformar a garagem velha em uma casa.
O primeiro passo do projeto era melhorar o aproveitamento de luz natural. Por isso, o arquiteto optou por fazer aberturas no telhado da garagem e substituir a fachada de metal por esquadrias transparentes com uma porta de correr de madeira que abre e fecha completamente a casa conforme a necessidade. Além disso, De Marien criou um pátio descoberto de 12 metros quadrados com piso de madeira na entrada da casa para o fotógrafo receber convidados e relaxar em um ambiente externo.
No interior da casa, o arquiteto teve que ser ainda mais minucioso e otimizar de forma mais efetiva o espaço. Foi então que ele teve uma ideia genial. Um único móvel serve como sofá para sala, armário para guardar objetos, mesa de trabalho, cama e divisória para o banheiro. Sendo assim, uma casa com 41 metros quadrados de espaço interno consegue parecer muito espaçosa.
